About Megan:

I’m Megan Oesterreich, mom to 3 amazing kids, wife to an amazing husband, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and avid OCR racer.

I found Emily 4 years ago and her challenges and presence online helped me completely change my life.  I needed to reconnect with my body and find the former athlete who had been hibernating during the “make, birth and nurse babies” phase of my life.  I was happy in my role in life but overweight, lacked muscle and energy, and knew I needed a change to be able to keep up with my kids and live an active life.   After that first 21 Day Challenge I was hooked.  My energy was through the roof, I started losing weight, nagging hip, lower back and wrist pains were gone.  I realized how gluten was wrecking havoc in in my body.  Since August of 2013 I have lived a pretty paleo lifestyle.  Of course there are days when I eat gluten or sugar or overdo it on the carbs.  At this point now, though, I realize how bad I will feel and decisions are much easier to make to eat clean.

At the end of 2015 I found Spartan Race and thought this would be a great way to step up my training and continue my fitness journey.  I learned, during the 3 hours it took me to complete that first race, that I needed more training (LOL) and that I could do anything.  I spent that 3 hours with a huge smile on my face, enjoying a new supportive community, and truly connected to my body.  I felt everything.  I took in the scenery.  I struggled on the obstacles and with the burpees.  I relished in my strength on other obstacles.  I never would have gotten there without my first 21 Day Superhero Challenge.  I truly felt like a superhero.

Now in 2017 I have completed 25 obstacle and trail races, achieved a Spartan Trifecta and am on track to finish at least 5 more obstacle course races and a Double Spartan Trifecta this year.

My kids often race now as well and I have taken my newly learned motivation, perseverance, health choices and knowledge into my private psychotherapy practice to assist others in finding that self awareness, self love and connection to your body.  So many of us are taught throughout life to deny that connection to our bodies.  To stop listening and just press forward, influenced by our upbringing, media or traumas.  We find ourselves lost and floating in the world, unsatisfied, disconnected and powerless.  I found a way to reconnect, love my body for what amazing things it can and has done.  Fuel it and nurture it, not punish or deny.   Life is good.

 

We asked Megan to tell us how she manages 3 kids (non-paleo), a husband and following her own diet.

I have 3 kids (11, 8 and 5). One eats almost no meat at all, one eats everything, and one eats almost no dairy (some raw milk) and doesn’t like veggies. None are Paleo or GF. My husband and I eat a pretty Paleo diet but do have cheese and raw milk. I have learned that I need to avoid gluten to feel good and train my best. I do a 45 min bootcamp 5days a week (mainly HIIT) and usually hike or run a race (OCR or trail) one weekend day.  I love eating Keto but realize I can’t sustain my training without more carbs in my life. I try to eat them mainly around my workouts but often enjoy an apple with peanut butter and cinnamon as an after dinner treat!
What does Megan’s daily food routine look like?
